Regenerative medicine is an exciting new field of medicine that seeks to repair, rebuild, and restore damaged tissue by maximizing the use of the body’s own natural healing processes. Our body has an amazing capacity to heal itself, but sometimes this process falls short or remains incomplete. Joints wear out, cartilage is lost, tendons or ligaments are torn and fail to heal completely, oftentimes due to limited blood supply to the damaged tissue. Regenerative medicine seeks to help the body heal itself by concentrating and delivering powerful healing agents like PRP and stems cells directly to the site of tissue injury. This restarts and maximizes the healing process in a natural way! New cartilage is formed, tendons and ligaments are repaired, and joints are restored! It is different than other types of treatments as it actually seeks to treat the underlying cause of the problem rather than just temporarily treating the symptoms. It is much less invasive than surgery, which can often lead to even more tissue damage. It is all natural without placing any foreign substances in the body and has much less risk and downtime compared to surgery. Typical treatments can be completed in just 1 hour. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasmaor PRP is a concentrated solution of the natural healing factors in our own blood. Platelets have been shown to contain powerful growth factors that are important in the regulation of our body’s natural healing processes in response to injury and degenerative changes. PRP is created by collecting a blood sample and then isolating the healing factors in the blood (found in platelets) through a simple, specialized process. It can then be injected back into areas of damaged tissue to restart or accelerate the healing process and restore proper function. What about Stem Cells and Liposuction? Dr. Tellis uses stem cells collected from your own body, NOT FROM EMBRYOS! Stem cells can actually be found throughout the body, especially in bone marrow and fat (adipose tissue). A mini liposuction is performed usually on the abdomen to collect fat from localized areas. Stem cells in the fat are then concentrated by a simple process. These adult stem cells can then be injected back into the body to form new tissue regenerating bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon, and even muscle or fat tissue where desired. Stem cells are activated and further enhanced when combined with PRP. More extensive liposuction for body shaping and contouring can also be performed at the time of your treatment if desired. You will need to let Dr. Tellis know in advance if you are interested in liposuction for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes in addition to your stem cell treatment.
Who is a candidate?
Anyone who has chronic pain related to arthritis, bursitis, tendon or ligament injury, or fasciitis. Conditions treated include hip, knee, shoulder, or ankle pain;heel/foot pain; tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis); Achilles tendinitis, and others. If your pain has failed to respond to usual treatment methods and you are not seeking surgical intervention then this may be an option for you!
